A Rendezvous with Childhood..............

Life gives surprises and yesterday was my turn. Some say, ‘do not count what you have lost. Just see what you have now’. But, I would say that history always strengthens the foundation of present and future. If the past was bad, it gives you the momentum to shape up life and if it was good, it acts as a stimulator to do better. Yes, yesterday I was being traced back to my history.

A colleague of my father had invited us for dinner. We stay at Bolani (Orissa) and he stays at Kiriburu. It is another Iron Ore Mines of SAIL-RMD which is 15 kilometers away from Bolani and falls under Jharkhand. Strange, is not it?

Well, since these places come under Saranda Reserve Forest so, we had to cut our vehicle through deep forest, which will only confine your imagination to Maoists’ attacks. As I was discussing these issues with papa, we entered Kiriburu gate. And we were soon near Bank More, a market place; turning towards left of it was my very first dwelling place, the Type-2 quarters. I was in the place where my ma brought me when I was 10 months old, where I got my second parents, my jethu and jethima and from where, I went to ‘Baby Land’ to learn the first lessons of life.

I was again in the place where I spent my initial 9 years of life.

While I was busy recollecting my childhood, papa showed the road on which he and ma used to fight for the reason as to who would carry me. Actually, the inclination of the road was very steep and I was too plump to be taken on lap. It was really hilarious.

Then, paving our way to HillTop, we went to the Jagannath Mandir, where the famous ‘Rath festival’ of Orissa takes place. Although, papa tried to make me remember that I had come here several times with him but, I could not even get a hazy picture. Still, it was fascinating listening to your own old stories.

Finishing our dinner, we decided to visit a family friend’s flat. We crossed ‘my school- KV’, the Kiriburu market- Bum Bum Pustak Bhandar, the pond where Chhat Puja still goes on and the very Kali Mandir area where we used to stay after leaving Type-2. My childhood came vivid in front of my eyes. Again, adding an emotional touch to it, papa narrated few incidences which insisted me to pray to god that let me take back to those days when life was so simple and beautiful, when ‘happiness’ prevailed over ‘money’, when ‘success’ was confined to securing good marks in school examination, when ‘scoldings’ were ‘learnings’, when ‘ice-spice’ was the favourite game, when evenings were occupied by ‘I dream of Jeannie’ and ‘Dennis the Menace’, when Sundays were meant ‘Sri Krishna’, ‘Rangoli’ and ‘Mahabharat’, when ‘home work’ was the toughest assignment and ‘morality’ actually existed.

Finally, visiting our family friend’s place, we started for Bolani. There are very few moments, when I had heartily thanked someone, but this time, I should thank that uncle because of whom I could go back to ‘life’ and find ‘myself’.

This trip to home was different. Every time I come home, nothing else hovers over my mind except that I will eat my favourite dishes upto the brim. But, this time when I started from Delhi, the state of my mind was in another horizon. I came searching for care, affection, love and above all peace. The busy life of the capital had kept me abstained from all these and I was not able to find ‘myself’. The ‘full of life’ and jovial Sumana (as Prof Basu used to say) was lost somewhere amongst the ‘ambitious’ lots.

I am still searching the definition of ‘being ambitious’ and ‘successful’. If anyone reading this piece knows, kindly let me know.

Well, I am rejuvenated again. Really, yahan ki hawa mein hi jadu hai.

  1. This is not to deny that how history strengthens the foundation of present and future by shaping a direction for a successful future. However, if the history is full of nightmares that you would never dare to dream, so it is always wise to abstain from it though you can’t forget it. Good narration of emotions Sumana that you recollected in tranquility and there is a reason to rejuvenate after a dose of life that is full of love, affection and honest emotions. Of course in the journey of life there is nothing wrong to be ambitious as being ambitious is not to be greedy but paving the path towards being successful. Being ambitious is a means to an end which may lead to the path of success… BUT now the question is how to measure success in the fool’s paradigm when getting some extra bucks by any means is considered as successful. I feel pity for that…

  3. life is all , ambition success....!! we all are beings driven by emotions our indomitable craving for happiness,WE crave for feeling connected and loved. For me i would find a quote of Ralph Waldo Emerson perfect to this bafflement of ours, sway of our mind between happiness and ambition"

    To laugh often and much
to win the respect of intelligent people
and affection of children; to earn the
    appreciation of honest critics and
    endure the betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty, to find the best
in others; to leave the world a bit
better, whether by a healthy child
    a garden patch or redeemed
    social condition; to know even
one life has breathed easier because
you have lived. This is to have
    succeeded.

A happy and jovial heart is place where dreams bloom, its the place where we call ambitions as dreams, and we follow them passionately with delirious happiness.

  4. childhood...hmm the most purest tenure of our life i guess?...i get goosebumps jst recollecting my those lost golden days and become wordless at that moment..so it must have been a herculian task for the writer to do both the things i.e recollect the past and write it down so beautifully i think...so the writer deservingly requires special appreciation..and the most striking part of the narration is the innocence with which it is written..amazing yr...sayaad ye childhood innocence hai...

  5. You can’t b more correct and precise when you are talking about the role of history in shaping up the future and maintaining the present. You are able to recreate your memories in your writing in simple and straight words and raised question which would force anyone for introspection. After having it read, for a second,I felt like I can answer the questions u raised, but next moment I realized, may be I can or may be I can’t,may be I don’t know or may be what I know doesn’t make any sense to u or anyone else. These words like success, ambition, happiness are open to interpretation for every single individual. These interpretations often fail us when we try to interpret someone else’s perception. No book no theory gives a standard definition of these words not even The Bible or Shrimadbhagavd Geeta or anything. It could be related with wealth for some Scandinavian nation or power for some feudal states like UP or Bihar or some kind of spiritual interpretation for Bhutan. It feels like, all of us have gotten everything wrong. We start our journey towards success or ambitions without defining these nouns. But on the other hand when we start our journey we are too immature for all this. When I started aspiring for IIT,I was too small to realize once I made my decision I am never going to come back to Satna or even MP, I would never get to stay with my family and gonna spend rest of my life in some irritating and crowded metropolitan . I guess lot of people like us have a description but, nobody has a prescription of do’s and dont’s.I must call you gutsy to dare to revisit your childhood memories despite of knowing that the past is never going to come back, I try not to do it cause I fear it.
Good luck buddy, keep it up:)

  6. Dear Sumana,

Your writing is pure, straight and innocent. It is a reflection of your heart. Keep up the good work and stay like this forever. You won't feel lost, because goodness and purity finally pays. The journey may seem long, but it will be more cherishable.

I have been to these places when I worked with Tata's at Jamshedpur. My fond memories got ignited back as these places unfurled in front of my eyes through your writing.

    God bless you.
